Senior Forestry Manager

The Opportunity: Are you experienced and dedicated to the forestry sector, looking for a role that you can really make a difference in? The Senior Forestry Manager will head up a small team, working from the estate office, managing the growth of the commercial timber operation and supporting the wider management of the estate. You will hold a wealth of knowledge and experience in the UK forestry industry and have the ability to lead a team to achieve objectives related to forest management and conservation.

The Company: A very well-established family run rural business, situated at the heart of the forestry region. Their business comprises 5,000 hectares of commercial forestry, the development of renewable energy sources, agriculture, property and sporting interests. They take great pride in a strong dedication to responsible and sustainable forest and land management and are increasingly dedicated to benefiting the broader community.

Role Responsibilities:

Direct supervision and management of the in-house forestry team
Creating and submitting forest plans, licensing requests, grant applications and other permissions
Compiling, communicating and overseeing annual revenue and operational budgets
The management of forest mapping, preparation of reports and long-term plans and the communication of these with the board of directors
The planning and supervision of standing, roadside and delivered timber sales, overseeing harvest operations and optimising associated revenues
Continuous coordination and oversight of contract operations, including ground preparation, planting, road construction and maintenance
Health and safety management across the estate

Skills you will need:

Essential

  • Experience and knowledge of the UK forest industry, grant process, woodland operations and standards
  • Over 5 years' experience in an operational management role
  • A relevant forestry qualification (Forestry or related degree or diploma)
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Strong communication skills both internally and with external stakeholders
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of growth opportunities in the rural sector
  • Self-driven, motivated and can think strategically
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work as a team or independently
  • Excellent IT skills and working knowledge of ArcGIS (training may be given)
  • ICF membership or working towards professional membership
  • Full UK Driving Licence
